Why is it, that post-Christmas - when it's cold, dark and fairly depressing - we decide it's a time for detoxing and frantic exercising?
I'm just not convinced that this is the best way to get through winter's bleakest months. For me, what we need in January – and February for that matter – is replenishment, comfort and self-care, something that more and more wellbeing experts are focusing on. Yes, you might have had a few too many mulled wines and mince pies and too little exercise, but that doesn't mean cutting out all the things you love. Instead, ease your way into spring GENTLY with these skin-boosting tips. And the best news? No early mornings at the gym or heavy weights required.
Move it with massage: Take your face to the gym with a bit of facial massage. If there's one thing that's guaranteed to get skin glowing, it's massage. Whether you use your fingertips, a manual facial brush, Eco Tools hand held Facial Cleansing Brush, £2.30, or an electronic cleansing brush – there are so many to choose from – massage helps to stimulate microcirculation, boost oxygen levels and exfoliate dead skin cells. I like to use a little rose oil or serum when I'm massaging, such as Dr Organic Rose Otto Facial Serum, £13.99, which contains Argan Oil, Jojoba Oil, Rosa Mosqueta Oil, Passion Seed Oil and Calendula Oil.
Feed your face: Stock up on skin-nurturing nutrients and shop for skincare that packs a multi- vitamin punch. Skin loves a feast – and that's one of the reasons that Tri-Balm, my multi-tasking cleanser, exfoliator and moisturiser, is packed with nutritious antioxidants, vitamins, immune-boosters and skin soothers. It's a blend of some of the most nourishing naturals including Carrot Tissue Oil, rich in restorative Vitamins A, B, C, D, E and F; Mandarin Oil, high in brightening and mood-boosting Vitamin C; and skin plumping Rice Bran Oil with Vitamins B and E.
Turn up the heat: As a facialist, I'm a fan of hot flannels. Not only does the warmth open the pores and help to 'loosen' any residue from make-up or skin products, it's also relaxing. When you're in the bath, soak a flannel in the water, wring it out, then drape it gently over your face. Leave for a few minutes – or until it cools down. For a double-whammy, massage in a small amount of Tri-Balm, then drape the hot cloth over your face for a minute. Remove the balm with the hot cloth and rinse.
Go upside down: There's real science behind the idea that yoga is good for the skin. Inverted postures such as Uttasana, a gentle forward bend, encourage blood flow to the face, delivering oxygen and protective antioxidants that result in fresher-looking, glowing skin.
